We look forward to meeting you at the heritage events and programs throughout the year. On our Events Calendar, you can view all the details and specifics of the many fun events throughout the year. In addition to many community events, exhibits, lectures and workshops presented by Heritage Mississauga, here are just a few of the “happenings” that we participate in each year:
February:
Heritage Day at The Grange
On the 3rd Monday of February Canada celebrates Heritage Day. Our shared heritage in all its forms has the power to bring people together and create a sense of belonging.
In celebration of our past and our future, we encourage all Canadians – whether young or old, deeply rooted or new to Canada – to visit museums, historic sites and cultural centres, and connect with traditional knowledge keepers, educators, parents and grandparents to experience heritage.
Heritage Mississauga takes this opportunity to celebrate our community heritage, opening its doors presenting exhibits, speakers, refreshments and conversation.
March:
Spring Equinox Sunrise Ceremony
Join Heritage Mississauga for a Spring Equinox Sunrise Ceremony led by Knowledge Keeper (Elder) Mark A. Sault (Gikinoo’amaagew inini) at the historic Robinson-Adamson House.
A member of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Mark learned many of his teachings from respected Elders of North Western Ontario while working in Thunder Bay with the Seven Generations Education Institute from 1990 to 2014. Mark retired in 2014 and returned to his home territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit where he was born and raised.
Mark has gathered and studied some of the local plants and trees that are used to make herbal teas that help with many of the health problems that plague our population and will share his knowledge of plants, harvesting and the holistic uses of sacred medicines.
On this morning, we choose to celebrate the beginning of Spring. We give thanks to the Creator for the great gifts of life, intelligence, free will and intuition. For all of these, we are grateful.
May:
Carassauga Canada Pavilion
Together with the Mississauga Sports Council, Heritage Mississauga hosts the Canada Pavilion at Carassauga annually. The pavilion features history, food, sports and entertainment as we showcase who we are as Canadians.
Heritage Mississauga Annual General Meeting (AGM)
Heritage Mississauga hosts the Annual General Meeting (AGM) open to Heritage Mississauga members and the public. Please note that you must be a member in order to vote at the AGM.
August:
Mississauga ITALFEST
The annual Mississauga ITALFEST festival features food, art, culture and history relating to Mississauga’s Italian community. Each year, Heritage Mississauga features exhibitions highlighting the life, the journey, joys and struggles of Italian immigrants in Mississauga including those who contributed to the early economy of Mississauga. Each year, the exhibits also spotlight a different region of Italy.
October:
Engagement at Bradley
Thompson’s Company War of 1812 battle re-enactment is held annually at Bradley Museum. Experience thrilling musket and drill demonstrations and browse historical sutlers, merchants and artisans.
Haunted Mississauga Heritage Tour
Haunted Mississauga Heritage Tour takes you on a guided walk around specific (and appropriately spooky) areas of the city. Haunted Mississauga began back in 2002 with a special lecture featuring late author Terry Boyle (who wrote Haunted Ontario). The initial event’s popularity spurred the creation of the tours, which now feature costumed actors portraying people and events from the past.
November:
The Credits: Annual Heritage Mississauga Awards
The Credits is Heritage Mississauga’s annual event, which honours members of the Mississauga community for their contributions and achievements with a celebration of our community heritage. Heritage Mississauga has recognized “Heritage Heroes” in the community for over 25 years, presenting the Credits gala for the last nine.
December:
Holiday Open House & Carolling at The Grange
Join us as we celebrate the season, singing carols around the campfire, enjoying hot chocolate and holiday treats. Help those in need, please bring a non-perishable food donation for the Deacon’s Cupboard food bank at St. Peter’s Anglican Church.
